The Emails Came From the House

A warrant return unsealed Tuesday says harassing messages used to imprison Lane Myers were sent from an IP address assigned to the home of Tucson City Prosecutor Matthew Walker and his wife Shannon. Police left with six laptops, including one issued by the city.

The city laptop goes for a ride. Staff woodcut of a search — not a photograph of any house, and not a portrait.

TUCSON — The paper asked, in the last extra, whether Matthew Walker got away with it. The driveway has filed an answer.

According to a search-warrant return unsealed Tuesday, some of the harassing emails that helped send YouTuber Lane Myers to prison for stalking came from the home of the alleged victim and her husband — Tucson City Prosecutor Matthew Walker. On Monday, Tucson police searched the couple's northwest-side house. They seized six laptops, including one issued by the City of Tucson, plus cell phones and a router.

That is not a metaphor. That is an evidence log.

The next day, November 3, Deputy Pima County Attorney Rachel Stiles stood in an emergency hearing and asked Superior Court Judge Douglas Metcalf to release Myers. She called what police had found "exculpatory evidence." She said it was substantive enough to raise questions about the "integrity" of the evidence Metcalf weighed when he sentenced Myers to three years in prison for an alleged probation violation — a sentence handed down roughly a month ago, and a year and a half longer than her own office had asked for.

The emails at the center of that sentence went out in June from a Proton account. On October 29, Tucson police Detective Pierre de la Ossa received Comcast records showing the messages came from an IP address assigned to the Walkers' home. An IP address is not a fingerprint and it is not a confession. It is, however, a terrible alibi. Myers' attorney, Mark Resnick, said county officials told him investigators had tied at least two of the Proton emails to that address. He left a Monday meeting with Stiles and Chief Criminal Deputy Josh Mosher under the impression the account belonged to Matthew Walker.

Prosecutors have not said which Walker, if either, created the account. The detective who sought the warrant said he was looking for evidence to "identify or exclude" whoever did. Other Proton emails could not be traced because a VPN was used. The county got this far late, Resnick said, because Proton is in Switzerland and the U.S. Department of Justice had to be asked to help.

Neither Matthew nor Shannon Walker responded to requests for comment, according to the reporting this extra follows. Asked whether the city prosecutor was still employed or had been placed on leave, a city spokesperson declined to comment, citing an "ongoing investigation." When a city-issued laptop is in an evidence bag, "no comment" is not a personnel policy. It is a holding pattern.

Metcalf did not free Myers on Tuesday. He ordered the state to bring him from prison in Kingman to Pima County Superior Court for an evidentiary hearing on November 17, and said he could not vacate the sentence before that. Stiles had asked that Myers be released while her office sorted it out. The man the county now says may have been condemned on tainted evidence gets to wait in a desert prison for a calendar. Joshua Gray, Myers' friend and fellow YouTuber, watched the hearing and asked the only question that matters this week: "Where's the sense of urgency?"

This newspaper prints what the warrant return, the hearing, and Resnick's account support. We do not print a forgery of a confession the detective has not made. We also do not print a lullaby. The emails used to bury a man were traced to the house of the prosecutor who testified about them. If that is not the story, the county can bring a better one to court on the 17th. Until then, the front page belongs to the router.

The Witness · Under Oath

He Told the Judge the Emails Felt Like a Threat. They Shared His Internet.

In August, Matthew Walker testified about Proton messages referencing the Second Amendment. Comcast now says at least some of that correspondence left an address assigned to his own house.

The oath, and the cable that would not stay outside. Staff engraving. Anonymous figures only.

On the first day of Myers' probation-revocation hearing in August, Matthew Walker took the stand and testified about emails that mentioned the Second Amendment and "2A." He told the court they felt like a threat. The messages, as described in the warrant and in open reporting, were profane and abusive: misogynistic names, talk of sexual assault, a demand that Shannon Walker resign, and language wishing her dead. They were the spine of the county's claim that Myers' YouTube videos about Shannon Walker had harassed her and set other people on her.

The warrant focuses on one Proton account whose sender name nods at the Second Amendment. Investigators have not publicly pinned the keyboard to a specific person in the household. That caveat is the difference between a charge and a cartoon, and this newspaper will keep it. What the caveat does not do is rescue the testimony. A prosecutor described those emails to a judge as a menace. The internet account that sent at least two of them, Comcast told a detective, was the one assigned to his house.

Resnick's impression, after the November 2 meeting, was that the account was Matthew Walker's. Impressions are not verdicts. They are, in this case, the impression of the defense lawyer the county itself called in after the search. The county is, Resnick said, looking at potential criminal charges. He commended the office for telling him. "I know it's what they're supposed to do," he told The Republic, "but it can't be easy when another prosecutor's involved."

Easy is not the standard. Disclosure is. Stiles ordered transcripts and said the new information put the integrity of the sentencing evidence in question. That is a prosecutor doing the thing the job description advertises and the culture often treats as optional. Credit is not a pardon for the pipeline that put Myers in Kingman. It is a receipt.

Walker has not answered the press. The city has not said whether its prosecutor is at his desk or on ice. A silence that large, next to a seized city laptop, is its own kind of testimony. It just isn't sworn.

Exculpatory Evidence, and a Bus Ticket for the 17th

Stiles asked Metcalf to let Lane Myers out while the county reread its own case. The judge scheduled a hearing. The prison sentence stays put until then.

State Desk · November 5, 2026

The 17th, used as a paperweight. Staff engraving of a delay — not a photograph of any prison.

There is a version of this story in which a judge hears the words "exculpatory" and "integrity of the evidence" from the same office that sought the sentence, and the jailer finds his keys. That version did not happen on Tuesday.

Judge Douglas Metcalf ordered Myers transported from prison in Kingman to Pima County Superior Court for an evidentiary hearing on November 17. He said he could not vacate the three-year sentence until that day. Stiles had asked for release in the meantime. The gap between those two positions is fourteen days of a punishment the state has now put in doubt, served at the pace of a minute entry.

Myers is in Kingman because, in early October, Metcalf revoked probation and sent him away for three years. The county had asked for one and a half. The violation, as the state framed it, was YouTube: videos about Shannon Walker after a July 2025 plea to felony stalking and harassment, and after probation terms that restricted what he could post about the Walkers. First Amendment lawyers had already called those terms a gag order with a docket number. Myers stayed off YouTube and lived inside the conditions for about a year. He asked Metcalf to modify them. He was refused. He says he then went to scholars, thought he understood the line, and believed a probation officer would warn him if he crossed it. He was arrested without a warning.

At the four-day hearing, Resnick argued that if strangers harassed Shannon Walker, those strangers should be charged — not the man who made the videos. Metcalf called it a retaliation campaign against the rule of law, a ball Myers rolled because he was angry that Matthew Walker had prosecuted him before. "He knew he was not supposed to do this." The ball, it now appears, may have been rolled in part from inside the house the campaign was supposedly aimed at.

Gray told his livestream audience he was euphoric and furious at once. Euphoric that the county said the quiet part into a microphone. Furious that a man the prosecutor wants freed is still a passenger on the state's clock. Urgency is not a feeling. It is a writ. November 17 is a date. It is not a moral argument.

The County Attorney · Credit and the Clock

They Did the Decent Thing. Then They Left Him There.

Rachel Stiles and Josh Mosher told the defense. That is what the law requires and what power usually avoids. The decent thing and the fast thing are not the same thing.

Editorial Desk · November 5, 2026

Mark Resnick is glad they called. So is this newspaper, with a caveat the size of a prison bus.

A prosecutor who discovers that evidence used to imprison someone may have come from the accuser's own router, and who then tells the court and the defense, is doing the job. Stiles said so in open court, on an emergency setting, and she asked for release. Mosher sat in the Monday meeting. The Pima County Attorney's Office does not get a parade for obeying Brady. It does get this sentence, printed without sarcasm: they told the truth when the truth was embarrassing, and the embarrassment had a badge.

The caveat: Myers is still serving the sentence that truth just punctured. The city will not say if Walker is at work. Stiles has not answered repeated questions from reporters. Tucson police did not immediately respond either. Disclosure in a courtroom and silence everywhere else is a familiar Pima dialect. We understood it in the last extra. We understand it better now that the silence has a property address.

Potential criminal charges, Resnick was told, are under consideration. This page will not draft them. Charging a prosecutor is the county's burden, and it should be a careful one — identify or exclude, as the warrant itself says, and do not launder an IP address into a novel. Careful is not the same as leisurely. The man in Kingman is not an exhibit. He is the exhibit's alleged author, currently locked up for a correspondence that may have been typed on the other side of the injunction.

No. 2 asked whether the system was corrupt. No. 3 sharpens the question. A system that can convict on emails, then discover the emails came from the prosecutor's house, then book the sequel for the middle of the month, is not confused. It is sequenced. The decent act has already happened. The decent speed has not.

What this extra will and will not say

Did Matthew Walker send the emails?
The warrant return does not say that, and neither do we. Comcast told a detective the IP belonged to the Walkers' house. Resnick left the county's meeting thinking it was Matthew. Prosecutors have not named which spouse, if either. "Identify or exclude" is the assignment. The scandal does not need the last name filled in to be a scandal.
Did he get away with it?
No. 2 asked that while he still had a quiet office and Myers had a guilty finding. No. 3 prints a search, a seized city laptop, and a prosecutor asking for release. Getting away with it is harder when the evidence techs have your router. It is not impossible. Ask again after the 17th — and after the city says whether he is still employed.
Why is Lane still in Kingman?
Because Judge Metcalf would not vacate the three-year sentence until an evidentiary hearing on November 17. Rachel Stiles asked that he be freed while the office sorted the new evidence. The calendar won the afternoon.
Is the county the hero now?
Stiles and Mosher told the defense and said the integrity of the sentencing evidence was in question. That is the job. It is also late, and Myers is still inside. A decent disclosure is not a time machine.
Is the system corrupt, or just slow?
Slow is when the bus is late. This is a system that built a prison sentence on emails, then found the emails coming from the prosecutor's house, then booked the repair for the middle of the month. Call it whatever the bar association can pronounce. We call it sequenced.
